AT Carry-On Review

Words by Jenny Brown

In the days leading up to a much anticipated break from work, a mad dash ensues. Motoring through what seems like a never-ending to-do list, the promise of spending the next seven days under Portuguese sun is all the motivation I need to complete it.

A week away in Portugal, split between a city break in Lisbon, exploring the granite bouldering in the forests of Sintra and surfing of the coast of Cascais. With such a varied trip planned I had a lot to pack.

With under an hour to pack, I spend the first 30 minutes hunting out my rash vest and in the little remaining time, fling any and all summer related clothing into the AT Carry-On, taking advantage of the wide side opening to stuff in as much as possible as quickly as I can.

Needless to say I pack way more than I will ever need for a one-week trip with the two internal compression straps just about holding it all down and helping to cover-up my packing shame. Nonetheless I stride confidently through departures knowing that I don’t have to worry about whether or not my backpack will be sanctioned as hand luggage. (The AT Carry-On is designed to fit all airline cabin restrictions).

The usual faff of unpacking and repacking to pass through security is immediately offset by some well thought out design. An easy access padded laptop compartment and those thank god internal compression straps mean I do not risk an embarrassing explosion of underwear onto the conveyer belt upon removing the necessaries.

Two conveniently located pockets also make the airport transition pain free; one on the front, ideal for travel documents and a hidden, top pocket for cash, keys, a mobile phone and other bits and bobs useful to have close to hand.

A packed flight, complete with a rowdy stag do means overhead cabin space is at a premium. Thankfully the easily detachable back straps tuck away snuggly into a slimline compartment located on the back of the pack, making the process of squeezing my bag in a lot less fiddly.

Touching down in Lisbon airport, I effortlessly re-attach the padded straps to make a quick exit from the airport to head by metro into the heart of the city. In spite of the fact that i am carrying half my closet, the Carry-On feels comfortable and stable, evenly distributing the weight across the whole of my back with adjustable chest and waist straps.

As we make our way through the winding cobble streets in the Alfama district of Lisbon taking in the afternoon sun before reaching our accommodation, I am able to take in the scenery without the distraction of a painful bag.

After easing into the holiday vibe with a bottle of local vinho verde, a hearty cataplana fish stew, and two traditional custard tarts, the next day we make our way to Sintra.
