Ben Tibbetts

Ben Tibbetts is an internationally renowned photographer and mountain guide based in Chamonix. With over 15 winter seasons of climbing, guiding and capturing stunning images in the Alps, Ben’s experience and knowledge of alpine environments, and how to photograph them, is second to none.

As a brand ambassador, Ben uses his countless hours and experience in the field to provide us with continuous feedback. Ou product design team use this to help us continually improve our backpacks. This follows our brand’s rich heritage of working with athletes starting way back in the late 1950's with Jeff Lowe testing the innovations of his brother Greg.

The Interview

Three Key Achievements

Living in the Antartica for 18months.
Becoming an IFMGA guide.
Learning to take photos.

Why did you start mountaineering?

At university in Edinburgh I spent a lot of time up in the highlands getting cold and wet

What motivated you to keep mountaineering?

The images mountaineering yields are almost as important to me as the feeling of being up in wild places with a good friend.

If you weren't mountaineering what would you be doing?

Taking photos...!

Are you good at any other sports?

Skiing

What is your greatest achievement in mountaineering?

Nothing particularly noteworthy... lots of classic Alpine faces such as the Jorasses, Droites, Grand Pilier d'Angle etc.

Where will you be 10 years from now?

Hopefully more expeditions and filmmaking in remote locations

What is it that excites you the most?

Climbing an excellent line, or skiing beautiful terrain, and then managing to record it on camera

What is your greatest fear?

Dying in an avalanche would be disappointing

If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

I live in Chamonix and haven't worked out where I would prefer to be yet!

Name 5 things you never travel without?

A good camera... all the rest is negotiable!
